The City of Oxford Society of Model Engineers (COSME) came into existence in 1988 when the miniature railway in Cutteslowe Park commenced operation following a move from Blenheim Palace. A brief history of the Society can be found here.

Largely composed of people from Oxfordshire and around, we are a friendly society and welcome people of any age from any background. There is no knowledge required or pre-requisites to join - only enthusiasm for what we do. Our members come from all walks of life (as well as professional engineers, of course, to make sure we are kept in line with all of the relevant legislation).

Some people may be put off joining as they think that "I couldn't do that" or "I couldn't make that" - but many members had no or little engineering knowledge to start with, but with enthusiasm, the rest soon follows.

Many of our members are skilled model engineers, and build locomotives which they run on the track in Cutteslowe Park. Some join the Society because of an interest in building other types of models such as stationary engines, traction engines, rolling stock or boats. Some join because they enjoy helping to build, maintain or operate our miniature railway.

On our running days, there are many roles performed by
     members.

These include locomotive driver, passenger guard,

track steward, manning the ticket office and helping

     passengers on and off trains.

Not all the practical skills used by COSME

members are related to model engineering.

Here are some of us busy rebuilding the clubhouse.

We maintain all the track and surroundings ourselves and this includes painting and decorating, landscaping and gardening.

One of the advantages of belonging to COSME is the range of expertise that has been built up by many members. A wide range of advice is freely available ranging from starting up and equipping a home workshop to advanced technical issues. We also run regular boiler testing sessions for members as all steam engines run on the CPMR must have a current certificate before they can be allowed on the track.

During the winter, we also run a series of monthly talks by visiting speakers. These are on a wide variety of engineering related topics ranging from old films of full size railways to new techniques available to the model engineer.
